When is the Office-based Laser and Minor Surgical Procedures for Optometrists course happening?
The in-person course will take place Thursday May 22nd 8:00-5:00 pm and Friday May 23rd 8:00-2:00 pm in Saskatoon at TCU Place. Your registration will also include self-directed and virtual lectures and the certification exam.

Elements of the program:
The course will include instruction by external and internal UW faculty that are proficient in the
skills and have real-world experience with these procedures. The course is designed so that
participants can learn the content at their own pace and get comfortable with the material prior
to all coming together for the workshops.
- Online – Pre-recorded online lectures (asynchronous)– Opens mid-February 2025 for registrants
- 8 hours of COPE accredited self-directed online learning modules (hosted on LEARN).
- A series of 5-1hr lectures with multiple choice questions following completion
- UW will help set up each registrant with a LEARN account to complete these modules
- Self-directed modules should be completed prior to beginning of live-virtual workshops
- “Live” Virtual Lectures hosted on Zoom – held between April 18 – May 9, 2025
- Series of 16 hours of COPE accredited live lectures hosted on Zoom webinar
- Combination of evening and Saturday sessions (2-4 hours each session)
- Attendance will be monitored for CE credit, recordings made available to attendees not able to attend to watch on own time
- Content will be tested during the final certification exam
- 12 hours of in-person hands on workshops (1.5 days) May 22-23, 2025
- Gonioscopy and anterior segment imaging (2 hours)
- Suturing workshop (2 hours)
- IV/IM injections (1 hour)
- Intradermal injection + radiofrequency surgical removal (1 hour)
- YAG capsulotomy workshop (1 hour)
- LPI workshop (1 hour)
- Cryotherapy/intralesional injection for chalazion (1 hour)
- Suturing part 2 (1 hour)
- SLT laser workshop
- “Laser Tag” – A timed race that allows participant to work as a team and complete tasks centered around the 3 main laser procedures to finesse skills.
*To ensure everyone gets a dedicated hands-on experience with our skilled instructors, participants will work in small groups of 10-12 for each workshop.
- Certification Exam (Exact date TBD)
- Two-hour, 100 question, online certification exam
The exam is held in the same learning management system that participants become familiar and comfortable with throughout the course. The exam is open for a 15-hour period to allow participants to complete the exam at a convenient time for them. The exam is open for 2 hours once the participant starts the exam and they are only allowed to answer 10 questions at a time to minimize collaboration during the exam. It is a closed book exam.
